The Los Angeles Lakers (22-20) head to the Pacific Northwest tonight for a high-stakes Western Conference clash against the Portland Trail Blazers (20-22). Both teams enter the Moda Center tonight desperately needing a win to solidify their postseason positioning, but they’ll have to do it while navigating a flurry of high-profile injuries.
Here are three things to watch tonight as the action tips off on NBA TV (10:00 PM ET):
1. Life without Luka
The Lakers’ offense faces its biggest test of the season tonight. Leading MVP candidate Luka Doncic has been ruled out with left groin soreness. Averaging a league-high 33.6 points per game, Doncic is the engine that drives the Lakers’ transition and half-court sets. With Austin Reaves (calf) also sidelined, the primary playmaking duties fall squarely on the shoulders of LeBron James. Expect a "Point LeBron" masterclass as he attempts to manufacture scoring for a depleted roster.
2. Can the Lakers' bench finally show up?
In Thursday’s loss to the Hornets, the Lakers’ second unit was a major liability, managing only nine total points. With Maxi Kleber moving into the starting lineup to cover for injuries, the pressure is on players like Marcus Smart and Gabe Vincent to provide a scoring punch. If the Lakers can't get double-digit production from their reserves, the heavy minutes for the starters could catch up to them in the fourth quarter.
3. Portland’s youth movement vs. LeBron's experience
While the Lakers are reeling from injuries, the Trail Blazers are one of the league's "trending" teams. Even without Damian Lillard, Portland has won three of their last five. The matchup to watch in the paint will be rookie sensation Donovan Clingan against the Lakers' interior defense. If Clingan can control the boards and alter shots at the rim, it will force the Lakers to rely on a perimeter game that has been inconsistent at best during this road trip.
